The following is a sample menu for people with diabetes. Note that this is only an example and is not intended for actual use. Please read:

Breakfast – 6 AM

  • 1 sm. orange
  • 1 whole English muffin
  • 1-2 oz. of low-fat cheese, ham, or turkey
  • 1 tbsp. of low-fat margarine
  • Coffee or tea or water

Total Carbohydrates: 45 grams

 

Snack – 9:00 AM

  • 8 oz. of low-fat or nonfat milk or

 

½ sandwich

Total Carbohydrates: 15 grams

 

Lunch – 12:00 PM

  • 2 slices bread or 2/3 cup of rice or 1 medium potato
  • 1 small fruit or 8 oz. 1% low-fat milk
  • 3-5 oz. meat, chicken or fish (not fried or breaded)
  • Vegetable and/or green salad
  • 1 tsp. vinaigrette dressing or mayonnaise
  • Coffee or tea or water or diet soda

Total Carbohydrates: 45 grams

 

Snack 3 PM

  • 6 crackers or small fruit or

1 cup yogurt (w/sugar substitute)

Total Carbohydrates: 15 grams

 

Dinner: 6 PM

  • 1 medium potato or 2/3 cup rice or 2/3 cup pasta
  • 8 oz. low-fat milk or small fruit
  • 3-5 oz. fish or meat or chicken (not fried or breaded)
  • ½ a cup of carrots or broccoli or cauliflower or spinach or pepper
  • Lettuce or salad greens (no limit)
  • 1 tbsp. sour cream or low-fat margarine
  • Tea or water or diet soda

Total Carbohydrates: 45 grams

 

Snack: 8:30 PM

  • ½ cottage cheese or ½ sandwich or 8 oz. low-fat milk or

1 small fruit or 1 cup light yogurt (w/sugar substitute)
