The first step for prevention metabolic syndrome is understanding what the condition is all about. Metabolic syndrome is described as a range of symptoms because several underlying conditions are associated with it.  The American Heart Association identifies these symptoms as high blood pressure, high triglyceride levels and excessive amounts of “bad” cholesterol. Low amounts of “good” cholesterol, abdominal obesity, insulin resistance and hormonal imbalance are other symptoms. Aging is also a risk factor for developing metabolic syndrome. The older a person gets, the higher their chances become of developing metabolic syndrome if the possess the other risk factors. Prevention metabolic syndrome is  important because it can lead to serious health problems such as cardiovascular ailments and type 2 diabetes.

The American Heart Association estimates that close to 50 million people have been diagnosed with metabolic syndrome in the United States alone. Prevention metabolic syndrome is essential to reduce this alarming number for future generations. If a family member has been affected by metabolic syndrome, it is all the more important for a person to actively practice prevention for the condition because hereditary has been shown to play a role.

The Mayo Clinic suggests three ways to reduce a person’s risk of developing metabolic syndrome, heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Coming to eating a healthy diet is the first prevention metabolic syndrome method. Ingesting plenty of fruits and vegetables is helpful. Limiting the intake of red meat and replacing it with white meat or fish is another sufficient strategy. Eliminating table salt is essential, and the Mayo Clinic encourages people to experiment with other spices and herbs to give food flavor.Exercise is the next key step for the prevention of metabolic syndrome. Getting regular, moderately strenuous physical activity will do wonders for a person’s health on a multitude of levels, including the prevention of metabolic syndrome. This can include a brisk 30-minute walk each day or a semi-intense yoga session. The third most important factor for prevention metabolic syndrome is to schedule regular checkups with a certified health physician so that they can monitor blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Besides diet, exercise and regular checkups, WebMD suggests a couple more strategies for the preventing metabolic syndrome. Losing weight is the most obvious. Of course, weight loss can be achieved through diet and exercise. If a person is actively pursuing both of those, weight loss should naturally follow. If an overweight person loses 10 percent of his or her body weight, they will drastically reduce their risk of developing unhealthy cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and high blood sugar, reducing their metabolic syndrome risk dramatically.  If a person is a smoker, they should quit immediately. Quitting smoking is not only helpful for the prevention of metabolic syndrome, but it will also help to prevent many other potential health hazards that could arise. Discontinuing the use of tobacco products can be achieved by prescription pills, over-the-counter products or even through hypnotherapy. A person who is concerned that they may be at risk for developing metabolic syndrome should seek advice from a medical professional.
