Diabetes and nausea are two conditions that are commonly found together. In most cases diabetes nausea is caused by low glucose levels, or hypoglycemia, in the blood. Hyperglycemia or high blood sugar can also cause nausea and vomiting. Nausea and diabetes is also a common symptom of gestational diabetes as well.

Diabetes Nausea and Vomiting

Another condition which may cause nausea with diabetes is gastroparesis. This is a delayed emptying in the stomach. In order to move food down into the small intestine for digestion the stomach contracts. This movement of food is caused by the vagus nerve. When this nerve is damaged, the muscles of the stomach and intestines do not work properly. Food then either slows or stops moving through the digestive tract completely. Many times this causes diabetes nausea and vomiting of undigested foods. Diabetes and other metabolic disorders is a common cause of gastroparesis.

Diabetes Dizziness and Nausea

Diabetics commonly complain about nausea in diabetes and dizziness. A was mentioned above this may be caused by hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. Autonomic dysfunction is also a condition which occurs in diabetes. In this condition, a person has an inability to compensate for changes in position. When this person stands, blood pressure increases, and causes nausea diabetes and dizziness symptoms.

Other conditions, often related to diabetes, cause dizziness and nausea. Many diabetics have high blood pressure for example, which causes both diabetes and nausea. Heart conditions, which are sometimes related to diabetes, often cause dizziness and lightheadedness as well. Conduction disturbances are a common cause. This is when the heart beats too quickly or too slowly, causing an inadequate blood supply to the brain. Cardiomyopathy is another such cause. It is a disease in the heart muscle in which the muscle doesn’t beat properly. It is often due to diabetes, alcohol use, or viral infections.

Diabetes Nausea after Eating

Nausea in diabetes occurs most often after an individual eats sweets. This can of course be caused by high blood sugar. In more serious cases, extreme thirst, weakness, confusion, and confusion may accompany the nausea. Artificial sugars used by diabetics can sometimes cause nausea as well as cramping and diarrhea when consumed in excess.

Rapid gastric emptying (RGE) is another cause of nausea in diabetes. Rapid gastric emptying is when the food is emptied into the small intestine too quickly. It most often occurs in during the digestion of simple carbohydrates, such as sweets. Other symptoms such as bloating diarrhea, weakness, fatigue, and dizziness may occur.
