Joslin.org provides a diabetic checklist for people with diabetes. This is a list of required tests and management skills that diabetics can review to help them to learn the skills of handling the disease. The diabetic checklist list includes things that you should learn such as:

  • Meal Planning
  • Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose
  • Use of Insulin or Diabetes Pills
  • Exercise
  • Foot Care
  • Sick Day Management
  • Urine Testing for Ketones
  • Tests that You Should Have at Least Once a Year
  • Special Topics

There are a number of different websites that have their own versions of this checklist such as Tennessee.edu, ClevelandClinic.org, and LillyDiabetes.com, just to name a few. Many of these are downloadable and printable. They can be a great tool for someone who is trying to do their best in handling the disease. If you do not have all the skills necessary to handle diabetes (which can be very difficult for even the best of us), you can ask your physician or a certified diabetes educator to go over the diabetes checklist with you, and help you acquire the skills needed.

Emergency Diabetic Checklist

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) provides an emergency diabetic checklist for people with Type-1 diabetes. This can be found on JDRF.org. This is a great diabetic checklist to have around. It lists the symptoms and what to do for hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. It also provides ways to list contact information, medical information, and supply lists made for schools, daycares, and the like. Submitting these forms will help you to assure your child’s safety.

EmpowerYourHealth.org also provides a diabetes checklist labeled Empower Diabetes Disaster Plan which allows you to prepare in advance for any sort of diabetes disaster. It is basically a diabetic checklist that helps you to put together a kit for emergency situations. It also helps families to plan what each person’s role will be in a time of emergency.

There is a similar list provided by DiabetesAdvocacy.com. In this one however, it is formatted in a way in which you can actually check each item off and write down the expiration dates for important medications and foods that you may use. This emergency diabetic checklist will help you, as a diabetic, be prepared and ready should an emergency happen such as a flood or a fire. After all, who is thinking about insulin when there is a forest fire outside their window?
