Metabolic syndrome is sometimes referred to as Syndrome X. Syndrome X treatment usually consists of lifestyle changes that reduce insulin resistance in the body. Diet and exercise are central components in Syndrome X treatment.

If an individual has any three of the following criteria, they are usually diagnosed with metabolic syndrome (Syndrome X):

  1. Abdominal obesity: a waist circumference of over 102 cm (40 in) in men and over 88 cm (35 in) in women.
  2. Serum triglycerides: levels of 150 mg/cl or above.
  3. Blood pressure: levels of 130/85 or more.
  4. HDL cholesterol: levels of 40 mg/dl or lower in men and 50 mg/dl or lower in women.
  5. Fasting blood glucose: levels of 110 mg/dl or above
