What is syndrome x syndrome? Syndrome X is another name for metabolic syndrome, which is a group of risk factors that occur together and increase the risk of coronary artery disease, stroke, and type-2 diabetes. According to the U.S. National Library of medicine syndrome x syndrome is becoming more and more common in the United States.

There are two major risk factors of metabolic syndrome. The first is excess weight in the middle and upper parts of the body. The second is insulin resistance, which means that the body cannot use insulin effectively. Other risk factors include age, hormone changes, lack of exercise, and a genetic predisposition.

“Anyone with a family history of type 2 diabetes who is overweight and sedentary should be evaluated for metabolic syndrome.” states Richard N. Fogoros, MD of About.com. He also states that the syndrome “can most often be prevented with exercise and maintaining a healthy body weight.”

For the most part, the risk factors of syndrome x syndrome do not have symptoms. The only real outward sign of it is extra weight around your abdomen. To find out if you have metabolic syndrome, your doctor will have to check your blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol. This is all the more reason to go for check ups regularly.

Syndrome X Treatment

There are several different conditions that must be treated within syndrome x syndrome. The most important of these conditions is insulin resistance. There is currently no drug treatment made specifically for insulin resistance. However, there is a way to reverse it through diet and exercise. If a person can reduce their weight to 20% of their recommended body weight and exercise at least 20 minutes a day, it is possible for metabolic syndrome to be reversed. Even if it isn’t, by doing this you’ve cut down your risk of cardiovascular disease substantially.

Lipid abnormalities are often present with metabolic syndrome. This includes low HDL (good cholesterol) and high LDL (bad cholesterol). High amounts of triglycerides may also be present. Reducing LDL is the primary goal. Exercise and diet are primary treatments of high cholesterol as well. According to one MayoClinic.com article, you can reduce your cholesterol by replacing fattening foods in your diet with the following:

  • Oatmeal, oat bran, and high-fiber foods
  • Fish and omega-3 fatty acids
  • Walnuts, almonds, and other nuts
  • Olive oil
  • Foods with added plant sterols and stanols

People with syndrome x syndrome are also prone to clotting disorders. Blood clots are a precipitating factor of heart attacks, so it is important to get treatment for this. Taking an aspirin daily is usually recommended by doctors, however be sure to speak to your doctor before starting this regiment on your own.
