One diabetic cure that may be underway is the use stem cells to cure diabetes. Stem cells have already been known to reverse diabetes in mice. Clinical trials have also found it to work in humans as well. Time Magazine reported in 2009 that a research team from the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil and Northwestern University were able to reverse the course of type 1 diabetes by using the patients own stem cells.

In a 2011 article by the Las Angeles Times, it is stated that the first successful transplant of islet cells in to a diabetic patient occurred in 1989. The article goes on to say that it isn’t perfect, but these transplants greatly improve diabetes to the point where the patient no longer needs injections. That is, at least until the beta cells stop working an a new transplant is needed.
