What is syndrome X? Syndrome X is what is now often referred to as metabolic syndrome. It is the name given to a group of risk factors which, when found together, increase a person’s risk of developing coronary artery disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Syndrome x is also sometimes referred to as cardiometabolic syndrome, insulin resistance syndrome, Reaven’s syndrome, and in Australia, CHAOS (Wikipedia.org, 2012).

X Syndrome Symptoms

Extra weight carried in a person’s midsection is a major symptom of x syndrome. High blood pressure, high blood sugar, and high cholesterol levels found together may indicate that you have syndrome x as well. If you have any of these symptoms, you may want to discuss with your doctor your risk of having or developing the condition.

Cardiac Syndrome X

Cardiac syndrome x (CSX) is often confused with metabolic syndrome x. CSX causes angina, which is chest pain or discomfort a person gets when the heart muscle doesn’t get enough blood flow. People with diabetes are likely to develop cardiovascular problems such as CSX. Women are more prone to CSX than men, and people who have a history of heart disease in their family tend to develop the condition as well.

Fragile X Syndrome Facts

Fragile X Syndrome is very different from both cardiac syndrome x and metabolic syndrome, although it is sometimes confusingly called syndrome x. Fragile x syndrome is a genetic condition in which involves changes in the X chromosome. According to the National Institutes of Public Health, it is the most common form of intellectual disability among boys. The following are facts about Fragile X syndrome:

  • It is caused by a small part of gene code repeating on the X chromosome.
  • It makes your body produce too little of a protein need for proper growth of the brain.
  • Boys are more affected by Fragile X syndrome because they only have one X chromosome, but girls can have it too.
  • A family history of the condition is not needed to for a person to have the disease.
  • Kids with syndrome x tend to avoid eye contact, may have a delay in speech or language skills, and may also be delayed in crawling, walking, or twisting.

Physical signs of syndrome x include flat feet, large body size, a long face, large forehead or ears with prominent a prominent jaw, and soft skin.
